RIO's AgentX™ Super Floatation Technology
AgentX Super Floatation Technology, the fusion of two coatings means the best in fly line manufacturing.
|
|
AgentX™ is a manufacturing process in which two coatings are applied to the fly line simultaneously. As a result, both coatings are fuse together in what RIO calls "Fusion Technology," forming a seamless single coating that will never separate or break down. The advantages of Fusion Technology are vast. The "under coating" not only seals the core and covers any potential blemishes in the braid; it also adds a super low density proprietary coating. The outer coating is perfectly centered around the core and allows for greater durability, less dirt pick up and longer casts. This fusing results in the smoothest, slickest, high-floating fly lines made. Ever.
|
|
To accomplish this, RIO developed a revolutionary new Super Floatation Technology™ that is five times lighter than the standard microspheres used in fly line manufacturing, but with much increased durability. This creates a fly line that has a much higher buoyancy (around 0.70 specific gravity - other manufactures achieve at best a 0.85 to a 0.90 specific gravity) and the extreme durability for which RIO fly lines are known.
AgentX™ is unquestionably the future of fly line manufacturing. The buoyancy as unbelievable smoothness, slickness, and toughness that result from this fusion of coatings make the use of standard microspheres and "one coat" fly lines prehistoric.

Anatomy of AgentX Super Floatation Technology
|
Dear Friends,
When was the last time the tip of your fly line actually floated? The tip of a floating fly line sinking has
always presented problems:
- Causing the fly to micro drag during dry fly fishing
- Making it harder to see subtle strikes when you’re nymphing
- Creating excessive drag when line is pulled off the water at the beginning of the cast
Obviously, a floating tip is better than one that sinks. So, for me, developing a
floating fly line with a tip that doesn’t sink has always been the Holy Grail of fly line design. And the RIO
lab did just that when it developed RIO’s new Patent Pending RIO AgentX™ Super Floatation Technology™.
An added advantage is a fly line coating which produces the ultimate SlickShooter® finish. And that
translates into distance.
Here’s how it works: Freshwater has a specific gravity of 1.0, and for anything to float in freshwater it must
have a specific gravity of less than 1.0. Most floating fly lines use hollow microspheres mixed into the
coating to achieve a specific gravity ranging from .83 to .90. Anything lower than .85 is considered a high
floating line, ideal for freshwater. However, there is a thinner coating on the tip and the result is that the
braided core, heavier than the coating itself, will sink the tip. Worse yet, the braided core will soak up
water through the line’s open end making the tip sink even more. That’s why one gets a sinking feeling
from the tip of most competitors’ floating fly lines.
But RIO has solved this problem by
- Introducing the RIO AgentX™ Super Floatation Technology™ into tip coatings for a specific gravity as low as 0.65 (!!)
- Incorporating our proprietary welded loop to eliminate the problem of water wicking up the core and dragging the line tip under.
We tested this new technology last spring and summer. Everyone was so excited by the results that we commenced production
this fall. Both the new Nymph line--which we introduced at the Fly Fishing Retailer Show--and the RIO
Grand lines feature the AgentX Super Floatation Technology.
I’m not going to tell you exactly what the secrets are behind AgentX Super Floatation Technology, but I
will tell you that it works, and all our field testers are really stoked about this major breakthrough. Once you
try it, I think you will agree.
Have great fishing this year,
