About Complete Outfits (Combos)
For Bonefish
Question:
I will be going to Bahamas to fish for bones. I have never fly fished. What would you recommend for an entry level complete fishing system (pole, reel, line, leader, flies). My biggest concern is price and I am only interested in an entry level quality system.
Answer:
An entry level outfit (rod, reel, backing, fly line, & leader) for bonefish would include and 8 weight (wt) or 9 weight (for windy conditions) fly rod. You could get either a 2 piece rod or a 4 piece rod (4 piece travels easier).
If your primary concern is price, our "Large Arbor Starter Combos" are a good place to start. However, you may not get enough backing material on the large arbor Airframe reel that comes in these combos. So, you may want to get an Integrity Combo in stead.
Here are a few links to outfits I recommend for getting started in saltwater:
$215.00 - 8wt, 9ft, 2pc Signature Series Fly Rod / Large Arbor Starter Fly Reel - Combo
$215.00 - 9wt, 9ft, 2pc Signature Series Fly Rod / Large Arbor Starter Fly Reel - Fly Fish Combo
$265.00 - 8wt, 9ft, 2pc Signature Series Fly Rod / Integrity Large Arbor Fly Reel - Fly Fishing Combo
$265.00 - 9wt, 9ft, 2pc Signature Series Fly Rod / Integrity Large Arbor Fly Reel - Fly Fishing Combo
$239.95 - 8wt, 9ft, 4pc Pro Fly Rod / Large Arbor Starter Fly Reel - Fly Fishing Combo
$239.95 - 9wt, 9ft, 4pc Pro Fly Rod / Large Arbor Starter Fly Reel - Fly Fishing Combo
$290.95 - 8wt, 9ft, 4pc Pro Fly Rod / Integrity Large Arbor Fly Reel - Fly Fishing Combo
$290.95 - 9wt, 9ft, 4pc Pro Fly Rod / Integrity Large Arbor Fly Reel - Fly Fishing Outfit
All outfits include the rod, reel, backing material, fly line, and a tapered
leader. Rod tubes are not included. I recommend getting the 4 Piece Fly Rod / Reel / Fly Box Carrier by BW Sports
($48.00 for a 4 Piece) so you can keep everything together and protected.
Bonefish take crab flies, gotchas, and charlies. Here is a link to our Bonefish Flies.
About Rods
Question:
When I join the pieces of my TFO fly rod, the male portion does not go all the way into the female so that the finished wrapping fits flush to the female.
Answer:
Over time use of your rod (casting, fighting, taking it apart, joining the sections) causes wear on the male portions. If the rod pieces were flush when you bought it, after a while they would become loose and unusable. The TFO rods are designed to last and stay snug over a life-time of use. With age, the wear will slowly bring the pieces closer together.
About Rod Blanks
Question:
Looks like there is a problem with the TFO blank. On the tip section, the black finish ends about one inch from the big end (1/2" gloss, and 1/2" sanded). This doesn't look right, as on all other sections the finish comes right to the big end.
Answer:
"The reason that your blank is finished like that is so that you can wrap and finish that section like we do at the factory. The grey section is what the blank looks like under the black paint. It shows you the titanium chromium impregnated blank. We wrap the rod to give you a "witness mark" which is a cosmetic embellishment showing the coating. The image (left) shows examples of how our TiCr and TiCr X are finished at the female ferrule. Please let me know if this helps and if I can do anything else for you." - Pitts Yandell, Temple Fork Outfitters
