Greg Poland
Islamorada, Florida (305) 393-3327
www.gregpoland.com

"I have been fishing with Greg Poland for many years now. He works out of Duck Key these days. Great person to spend a day with. Knows the keys like the back of his hand as well as the everglades. Works tirelessly for the client. Recently was the guide for the winner in the Del Brown permit tourney. Thought you would like to know and pass along."

- Michael Kaye

"[Greg Poland] is one of the best guys I have ever had the pleasure of fishing with. I like him better than any of my friends! Whether it's a half day, full day or more, you get 110% out of Greg every time. He is extremely knowledgeable and is incredibly open and patient. He will work his butt off all day to get you on the fish. I have used him twice now and will continue to use him for Flats and Offshore fishing alike. He is super personable and you feel like you're fishing with your buddy and not someone just working his job with a client - in fact, we've stayed in touch and communicate frequently. I highly recommend using Greg - just look at his credentials on his website - 'nuf said!"

Gulf Breeze Guide Service specializes in fly fishing the waters of the Gulf of Mexico around Pensacola, Florida. The area is known as Florida’s Emerald Coast because of the sugar-white sandy beaches and emerald green waters. In addition to the gulf, "Baz" fishes the diverse waters of Pensacola Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway targeting over fifteen resident and migratory species including redfish, pompano, false albacore, speckled trout, jack crevalle and tarpon. He has fished these waters for over 30 years and put this experience to work guiding anglers to success.

"I spoke with Edye Faircloth from Juliette, Georgia the other day and he gave a glowing recommendation on Jason Rucker. She said Jason was helpful, patient, and well prepared for a fun day of catching fish."

Jim Bennett
Marathon, Florida (305) 289-3487 www.captbonedaddy.com

"I have used the same guide [Jim Bennett] in the keys for years. He lives and works out of Marathon. He works real hard to find fish, will fish anywhere from the lower keys, out to the park, back to long key, or anywhere in between. Best of all, he willingly takes out beginners. Fly or spin, bonefish or mackerel, I can't say enough good things about him. Give him a try."

- Rob Felten
  Lake Forest, IL

"This past October, my son and I went to Marathon Fl. for some flats fishing, mainly bonefish. First time for either of us.

I booked a guide by the name of Captain Jim Bennett for 2 full days or 8 hours each.

He picked us up at our hotel in Marathon each day for a full 8 hours on the water each day. Jim worked very hard, as he put us on some bonefish which we caught, had shots at tarpon, caught mutton snapper, my son caught a 100+ lb. blacktip shark, 'cuda.

It was a tremendous time. Jim was very patient with us and knowledgeable about currents, tides, etc. therefore the trip was very educational as well. I'm already planning another trip with him in late Feb./ early March of next year.

On top of all that, he is a genuinely nice person. We email each other about every other week or so. I can highly recommend Jim as a great guide. I'll continue to use him."

- Tom Willingham

Todd Ziels
Marathon, Florida (305) 289-8620

"Todd is a relatively new shallow water guide in Marathon who has quickly shown that he is going to be one of the really good ones. He is a protege of Nat Ragland and Greg Poland and fishes from Key Largo to the Marquesas to Shark River depending on the season. He fishes both spin and fly and works very hard for his anglers. Todd fishes out of a Hells Bay skiff which allows him to reach the skinniest of water."

- Charles L. Siemon   Boca Raton, FL

Dave Collins
Marathon, Florida 1-800-700-5261 www.polaris.net/~flats/

"I have fished with a gentleman in Marathon for over 5 years now (five days at a time; two or three times a year.) We've chased Bones, "Poons and Permit all the way from Islamorada to Big Pine Key and on both sides of the islands.

I started fishing with Capt. Dave Collins when I first decided to try Keys saltwater fly fishing; after a 30 year layoff from chasing brookies and rainbows through the puckersheer of New Hampshire and Vermont. Needless to say I was not only rusty, but totally ill equipped for the new venture. It was an introduction to an entirely new world.

On our first foray onto the flats (it was a spur of the moment thing for me as I was visiting friends in Marathon and had No Gear!!) I alternated between a spin rod and one of Dave's excellent Sage rods. That rod was like a tree trunk compared to my old 3/4 wt split bamboo rod of younger years. I managed to catch a few smallish Bones, scare the hell out of most of 'em and catch a lot of great help, advice, and encouragement from Dave; and none of that "guide attitude" you so often hear about.

Five years later, with Dave's guidance, I can handle myself pretty well in most fly fishing situations. Dave put me onto a half-baked Grand Slam 18 months ago (Bone, Perm and Poon within twenty four hours covering two consecutive days and the Permit broke off at the boat) so half baked, but a great thrill.

Dave is tireless and gives his very best effort every time we're out. He is extremely knowledgeable, knows where and when they are and where and when they ain't. He will very nicely bring an observed casting or presentation flaw to my attention - just letting me get a little better each time. Dave loves to fish and constantly works to keep his local knowledge fresh and continues to add to his already considerable knowledge of the species we stalk.

To top it all off he is just a real fine pleasant person with whom it is a pleasure to spend time and catch great fish in the bargain and has become a real friend. He has superb and up-to-date equipment Sage, Tibor etc. and is an inventive, skilled and successful fly tier (successful meaning his creations catch fish). If you decide you want to use his gear instead of your own, the boat (a customized Hewes) is always well fitted out.

If you're looking for a Great Guide Recommendation, Mike, I cannot say enough good things about Capt. Dave Collins from Marathon, Florida.

Thanks for the opportunity to recommend Dave to you."

Ron LePree
Bonita Springs, Florida (941) 498-9992 www.backcountryfishing.com

"He fishes in the vicinity of FT. Myers, Sanibel Island/Captiva. He'll work his tail off to find you fish, even if they are snook and sea trout but he specializes in hunting tailing reds and he'll end up poling his flats boat for half a day to get you in range of fish-especially in the area of Pine Island Sound. If you're not a purist, he'll take you bait fishing also-maybe for gag grouper but I imagine most people would prefer to catch redfish on a fly instead of chunk bait."

"I wanted to recommend myself. I was convinced by family and friends to get my Captains license so that I could get paid for what I do best in life, Saltwater Fly Fishing.

I am Part-time, for 2 reasons. Most people in this area just want to catch fish so they go bait fishing, and I do not pitch shiners! So that leads me to the fact that I am lacking the quantity of clientele it would take to sustain me full-time.

I grew up here in Fort Myers so I know the waters, and the migration patterns of the fish which changes almost weekly. There is an excellent fishery in SW Florida. Redfish (very educated but catchable), large Sea Trout (25 - 35" is not uncommon), Snook (everybody wants them) and my personal favorite Tarpon. Percentage wise, I would say that 70% of the fishing is sight fishing. There are times during the year when it is more Spot fishing than sight fishing due to water clarity, but no matter what time of the year there are usually a few areas with clear water and fish.

I have a new rig that I bought specifically for Flyfishing and comfort. 2001 Actioncraft Flyfisher 1720 SE. This boat is excellent. I have rigged with Yamaha power with a jackplate and nose cone kit. This all adds up to me being able to comfortably fish the shallowest waters before any of my rivals.

This is a beautiful thing. I have already fished deep in the backcountry of the Middle keys backcountry with huge success. I actually won one of the two Flyfishing awards in the recent Actioncraft owners tournament in Islamorada (my home away from home) for best Redfish on fly. This was in part due to my boat poling in a mere 8 inches of water with 3 men aboard.

Anyway, enough promotion. I love to flyfish, especially in my home saltwaters. If you ever need a flyfishing guide, not just some local redneck shiner tosser, I would be happy to oblige. I have a sales job that allows me some flexibility to take trips during the week, besides Saturdays. Oh, I should also mention that I am good friends with the editor of Florida Sportsman. Jeff is an avid fly fisherman, so we do a lot of trips together. Look for me in the magazine."

"On my trip to key west in august I met Greg on the phone for the first time. He was curtious and very understanding of my needs, since it was my first time doing the saltwater thing. He explained all we needed to do as if he was speaking with an old friend. He really made me feel comfortable. The next morning my wife and I were picked up by him and he took care of everything after that. From driving us around, to explaining all there is to know about saltwater flyfishing. Including knot tying, fly selection, insight on the species we were after and everything you can imagine.

"The guy was great!" Most of all he put us on some incredible fishing spots. With hundreds of fish we had a blast. The best thing of all is he became our friend. We talk all the time. 'I have a friend in Key West' I'm there in June for those 100+ lb. Tarpon. Give him a call, tell him Carlos sent you."

"I just wanted to take a few minutes to recommend a guide that I have been fishing with for a few years. Ethan Wells fishes The Texas gulf coast from June until December and then moves his outfit to Florida from January until May where he fishes from the ten thousand Islands all the way to the Keys. I have fished allot of guides around the world and I rank Ethan as one of the Best. He is like a good coach on the water. Ethan has taken my fly fishing abilities to another level since our first trip together.

If you are looking for a guide that is professional, polite, resourceful and has great understanding and respect for the water, Ethan is your man. I do not usually take the time to recommend people but, as you can see, I could not say enough good things about Ethan and Wells Outfitters"
